President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Thursday urged beneficiaries of the barangay scholarship program to take their studies seriously and complete their education.
The President met with 690 student-beneficiaries identified by their respective barangays at theTacloban City Convention Center.
Mag-aral kayong mabuti,” President Marcos said during his visit to Tacloban City.
Under the program, each barangay nationwide receives PhP200,000 in funding, with half allocated to support scholars, particularly those in their final year of college.
At least five students per barangay are prioritized for financial assistance to ensure they complete their degrees.
The initiative aims to address the country’s 39 percent college attrition rate, often caused by financial difficulties during the final year of schooling.
The President also emphasized the importance of cooperation between the national and local governments in implementing education and infrastructure programs.
The Chief Executive noted that school building construction has been accelerated by tapping local government units to complement the efforts of the Department of Education.
The President said the scholarship program would be expanded if it proves successful and properly implemented.
“If this becomes a success…asahan ninyo ang next budget dadagdagan natin sa susunod na taon,” President Marcos said.
The President reiterated that the government’s goal is to ensure faster and more responsive delivery of services, particularly for students in need.
The program is expected to benefit more than 200,000 scholars nationwide once fully implemented. | PND
